What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Definition
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring and optimizing content to appear as the direct, cited answer in AI-powered answer engines like Perplexity, Google SGE, Bing AI, and ChatGPT — rather than just ranking in traditional search results.

What Is an Answer Engine?

An answer engine is an AI system that responds to a question with a synthesized, direct answer instead of a list of links. Instead of "here are 10 pages about this topic," it says "here is the answer, drawn from these sources."

I saw this shift from the losing side first. Google started answering our users' questions directly on the results page, and our informational traffic dropped. But something else happened that most people missed: the visitors who still clicked through were far more qualified. Fewer visits, more sales. Visibility stopped meaning "appearing on a results page" and started meaning "being the answer the engine cites."

Which Platforms Are Answer Engines?

Perplexity
Pure answer engine — performs live web search, synthesizes sources, cites pages directly in responses
Google SGE / AI Overviews
Google's AI-generated summaries shown above traditional search results, pulling from indexed content
ChatGPT (with browsing)
When web browsing is enabled, ChatGPT performs Bing searches and synthesizes current content into answers
Bing Copilot
Microsoft's AI-powered search integrated directly into Bing results, citing web sources in responses

AEO is a subset of the broader Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) discipline. While GEO covers all AI-driven brand visibility — including recommendations, comparisons, and brand mentions — AEO focuses specifically on being selected as the direct answer source. In practice, the tactics overlap significantly: both require direct answers, structured content, and strong topical authority.

What Are the Core AEO Tactics?

How Do You Measure AEO Performance?

AEO performance is measured by tracking how often your content is cited as a source in AI-generated answers, and how often your brand is mentioned in those answers. This connects directly to your overall AI visibility score — the aggregate measure of your brand's presence across all AI answer platforms.

This is exactly what I built Citevis to do — monitor your mention frequency across Perplexity, Google SGE, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and show which queries surface your brand as an answer source and which ones cite your competitors instead. Frequently Asked Questions About AEO

Does AEO require a high domain authority?
Not necessarily. Platforms like Perplexity prioritize content clarity and directness over raw domain authority. A well-structured page on a newer domain can outperform a high-DA page with poor answer structure. That said, brand entity signals — coverage across authoritative third-party sites — do improve AEO performance over time.
What is the most important AEO signal?
The 40-word direct answer placed immediately below a question-format heading is the most reliably cited content pattern across all answer engines. Pages that answer the question in the first two sentences of each section are extracted far more often than pages that build to the answer over multiple paragraphs.
Is AEO the same as optimizing for Google featured snippets?
They share similar tactics — both require direct, concise answers near the top of a section. However, Google featured snippets come from traditional search ranking, while AEO targets AI-synthesized answers. A page optimized for featured snippets often performs well for AEO too, but AEO requires additional attention to entity coverage and topical completeness that snippet optimization alone doesn't address.
